The date for the AWC Membership Tea is at hand. The date is Sunday, August 22 at the Fran Carlton Center starting at 3 PM ending at 5 PM.

Yes, I am very late getting this started and I really need your help to make sure it happens. Therefore, I am requesting you join me on Monday, August 2 at 10 AM for a meeting to finalize the plans. The meeting place is in the RE/MAX Boardroom in the two-story building next to Wendys across from City Hall on Main St. Parking and entrance is in the rear of the building.

Somethings have been done:

The AHS JrROTC cadets will be on hand to setup (1 PM) and take down (5 PM) the tables and chairs. (Ruby, this includes the serving tables setup like last year. I believe there were three (3) long tables together. Let me know if I am wrong.)

Ruby has consented to making up the menu and sending out the request via email to our membership to donate food, tea, whatever she needs, etc. She will be in charge of the serving table, directing all things involved with making it look beautiful and inviting including the tablecloths, any decorations, and placement of the food, etc. (Ruby, please see #5 re the urn.)

Louise Fortunato is in charge of publicity.

Kathy Hopper is the contact person for the RSVPs. Also, she has arranged for a magician to roam the room and entertain us for approximately 45 minutes starting around 3:15 PM. We want “fun” time.

Robin McEwen has arranged for the invitations and we hope to have them at the meeting. Robin has offered a coffee urn for the hot water for the tea.

Chris Hammett has printed the mailing labels for the invitations and delivered them to me. Chris is, also, sending out an eblast to the membership about donating food. Not sure if I asked Chris, but we would like for a “looped” slideshow of AWC events to be shown all during the Tea. We should have lots of Festival pictures.

Doris Griffith is responsible for making sure we have enough card tables. Everyone who supplies tables will be responsible for making sure there is a table cloth for it. Nothing too loud and no bold prints. Soft plain colors or soft (color) flower prints will be find. The cloths do not need to touch the floor, but it would be nice if they did.

We need a volunteer to take the responsibility for some type of decoration on each table. There will be 17 card tables and, possibly, one 8 ft head table????

Please do your best to attend the August 2 meeting.

You are the greatest…thank you,

Joyce Brocker

Let’s just begin by saying that the meeting was a great success! We awarded six scholarships to outstanding Apopka seniors and one adult scholarship to a woman who is planning to become a dental hygienist. We had a delicious potluck supper provided by the members and honored distinguished members who had been in the club for ten years or more! We also elected our new officers. We will have more details later. Please click here to view and download photos from the evening. If you were not able to be there, you were missed. We hope to see you, soon!

I’m currently pursuing nominations for Apopka’s Grandmother of the year. Most of us know many women who either live or work in our community that deserves special recognition.

We need nominations. Anyone can nominate a special lady they know. The winner is honored and presented with many great gifts, $500 cash and they will always be recognized as one of our communities matriarchs.

The easiest way for nominations to be filled out is at our website – www.theapopkachief.com

I have attached other information along with a 2010 Grandmother of the Year Form.

Anyone can nominate any lady they feel deserves the title of Apopka’s Grandmother of the Year. The nominee must live or work in Apopka.

This is the 9th year we have honored these women. The winner is honored through the year – Christmas parade and other events. Last years nomination dinner had 300 in attendance.

SATURDAY, APRIL 24, 2010

9:30 AM Opening Ceremony – This is the first time this has been done. The two Apopka High Schools, AHS and WHS, will be performing the National Anthem for the Opening Ceremony. Band Director WHS, Leo Lamos, says it will not be the entire band but 20-30 chosen few. Band Director AHS, Chris Cannon with, what we believe to be, the same number will join them.

10:30 AM Rock Springs Elementary – The Music Makers led by Lynn Schroeder, Music Director. Three 3rd grade classes will be singing, playing instruments, and dancing. Ms. Schroeder encourages these students to participate. This is a Class A school.

11:15 AM Joe Caccioppo, Magician - This is a first time at the Festival for Joe. He has delighted and performed for many audiences, which include birthday parties, trade shows, a fun show on a cruise ship, and almost every casino on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After his performance at the Gazebo, he will walk around the park and entertain the attendees as a street performer would.

12:00 PM Bethany Burnette, Vocalist. Bethany has been performing for most of her life. Born in Nashville, TN, she began acting and modeling at the age of four and has appeared in numerous print ads, fashion shows, and TV commercials. At age five, she learned to play the violin and performed in many shows as part of the children’s violin group. She has performed at dozens of festivals, fairs, parades, hotels, special concert series at public libraries, and other concerts. One of her biggest thrills was singing a solo at The White House. Musical theatre is Bethany’s special love and she has had roles in over 20 musical productions. Bethany just finished recording her new single, which will be released soon. Check out her website at www.bethanyburnette.com.

12:45 PM Dream Lake Elementary - Musical Dreamers led by Juli Thrush, Music Director. This is an ensemble of fourth and fifth graders who love to sing and play instruments. The program is very patriotic and dedicated to our Armed Services personnel whose service and sacrifices help keep this great nation free.

1:30 PM Kidz Dance Performance Company led by Mary Rischer. This dance company is located in Apopka on Highway 441 in the Victoria Plaza. Kidz Dance Performance Company has contributed to our Festivals for several years. They perform for community and charitable events throughout Central Florida. Check them out on their website www.kidzdance.com.

2:15 PM Apopka Elementary is led by Adelia J. Chambers, Music Director. This group is the Apopka Elementary Fine Arts Club, Gospel Chorus Club, Records Club, and Dance Team.

3:00 PM Victory Church Chorus and Band, led by Ben Bankson, Worship Director. The Victory Church Worship Team made up of 8-9 members will be singing and playing for us some of our favorite Christian music. It seems the Bankson family is very musical and the group includes three members of that family. You can find them praising the Lord each Sunday at the Victory Church at the corner of Park Ave. and 5th Street.

3:45 PM DJ’s Unlimited brought to you by Ralo Flores - Some of the best DJ music you will find anywhere. Ralo is well-known in Apopka. He will bring you samples of the best music to entertain you as you stroll the park and enjoy the Festival.

SUNDAY, APRIL 25, 2010

9:00 AM DJ’s Unlimited, Ralo Flores starts our morning with more great music.

12:00 PM Awards Ceremony - Apopka Woman’s Club presentation to our Artists and Crafters.

1:00 PM Kristina Kee, Vocalist - Kristina graduated Apopka High School in 2008 and now attends Valencia Community College where she is studying voice performance. Kristina attends Apopka Calvary Church of the Nazarene where she was a singer in their youth band for 4 years. She is now a part of their praise team on Sunday mornings. Kristina is the granddaughter of artist John Yeackle who has been showing at the Apopka Festival for over 20 years. This is Kristina’s 5th year singing at the Apopka Art & Foliage Festival and considers it a privilege to be able to sing for her community again.

2:00 PM “Sister Act” from First United Methodist Church. Susan Bornmann will introduce this musical group from our local First United Methodist Church.

3:00 PM Melissa Jo Elliott, Vocalist - Melissa Jo is a Gospel Soloist with a love of reaching those that are hurting through songs of encouragement, reflection and inspiration. Melissa Jo resides in Lake County, Florida and has ministered in Central Florida with occasional ministries in Kentucky and Tennessee. She released her debut CD in 2008 titled “I Know How to Fly” recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. You can find out more about Melissa Jo by visiting her website at www.melissajoelliott.com.
